Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is a technique that corrects the aesthetic deformities of the nose: it can decrease or increase the size of the nose, change the angle between the nose and upper lip, narrow the nostrils, or change the shape of the tip or the back. It can also correct some breathing problems. It is the favorite procedure of most plastic surgeons becasue it presents the greatest surgical challenge: the perfect combination of technique, common sense and aesthetics.

Pre-operation

We perform a pre-operation overview including a complete medical analysis (hepatitis / AIDS) and electrocardiogram. If the patient is over 40 years, a chest x-ray is also required.

Surgery

The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis. Depending on each case, it can be done under local anesthesia and sedation or general anesthesia. The operation is performed intranasally through an intercartilaginous incision, disconnecting the nasal dorsum in order to work on it from behind.

There is also what is called external or open rhinoplasty, which allows the surgeon to see all the anatomy perfectly. There are no visible scars because the incisions are inside the nose, and even in open rhinoplasty the scar is not visible.

Post-operation

Rhinoplasty surgery is not at all painful, and the patient can continue with their normal life virtually from the first day. Nasal plugs are placed in both nostrils to prevent bleeding and stabilize the septum, and are removed between 24 hours and up to two days after surgery.

In the first 24 hours the patient may experience swelling, discomfort and headache, all of which can be relieved with medication. Applying cold or ice will reduce inflammation. The patient will be able to return to normal life in about 10 days, but for 20 more days should avoid playing sports, strenuous exercise or any activity that increases blood pressure. Today, rhinoplasty is one of the most frequent procedures and has the highest patient satisfaction in cosmetic surgery.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long will I have to wear the cast?

The cast helps maintain the new shape of the nose and should stay on from seven to ten days. This can result in the patient withdrawing from their social activity or taking sick leave from work, but this would only be for purely aesthetic reasons.

Can I wear glasses?

Exposure to direct sunlight must be avoided for three months, and if you wear glasses they cannot rest on the bridge of the nose until the doctor says it is safe to do so. Contact lenses present no problems.

When can I start breathing through my nose again?

You can start breathing through your nose as soon as the nose plugs are removed. However, you shouldn’t blow your nose forcefully for about a week until the tissues heal.

Will the surgery change my facial expression?

No, only the proportions of the nose, which will mesh far better with the face as a whole.
