Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)

The defect known as "protruding ears" is due to the lack of a fold, which causes the ears to stick out from the sides of the head.

Although surgery is not recommended before the age of 18, in this case it can be justified for social reasons. If an aesthetic problem may lead to a psychological problem, it is preferable to fix it sooner rather than later. Otoplasy operations are already performed starting at the age of 5 years, as doing them earlier doesn’t allow enough time for a child to develop a complex.

Pre-operation

We perform a pre-operation overview including a complete medical analysis (hepatitis / AIDS) and electrocardiogram. If the patient is over 40 years, a chest x-ray is also required.

Surgery

The procedure is performed by shaving a bit of the cartilage, remodeling and repositioning it and then joining it to the mastoid region. The intervention is simple and gives the ears the curve they lacked through a posterior incision. It is performed under local anesthesia and sedation and lasts about an hour.

Post-operation

For the first hours, the ears may become swollen, red, hard and/or numb. All these discomforts gradually fade in the days foillowing surgery, assisted by the prescribed the use of a pain medication and antibiotics. Athletic activity is not recommended until a month after surgery in order to avoiding hitting the treated area, nor should the area treated be exposed to direct sunlight for two to three months.

This outpatient surgery does not require hospitalization. After surgery, the patient will remain under observation for a few hours before returning home
