Breast reconstruction

In cases of mastectomy, the current trend is to avoid wherever possible the complete removal of the breast. Today, the preferred procedure is to make minor excisions of tumors followed by radiation therapy sessions, finishing with immediate breast reconstruction using prostheses.

When complete removal is inevitable, reconstruction microsurgery is then performed. It usually has positive results and few postoperative consequences.

Pre-operation

We perform a pre-operation overview including a complete medical analysis (hepatitis / AIDS) and electrocardiogram. If the patient is over 40 years, a chest x-ray is also required.

Surgery

Breast reconstruction can be done immediately (during the removal operation) or in a separate operation which can take place as early as six months afterwards and when deemed appropriate by the oncologist.

There are several forms of recontruction:

With the patient’s own tissue:

This is the best method for patients who have insufficient tissue and skin cover on the chest due to radiation therapy, but who do have abundant abdomen mass. It uses the abdominal fat and muscle, which is tunneled and brought up to the breast area where it is used in reconstruction. This step is carried out in the first stage of surgery. The areola and nipple are later built in the second stage.

Reconstruction with implants:

Implants are used when there is sufficient tissue and skin cover to do so. In this procedure an expander, similar to a plastic balloon, is placed inside the breast and is slowly filled until a permanent implant can be inserted and the areola and nipple rebuilt.

In all cases of reconstruction, one of the prime objectives is symmetry and it may be necessary to perform surgery on the unaffected breast as well, be it augmentation, reduction or lifting. These operations are performed under general or local anesthesia and sedation, varying the length of surgery and the post-operative period.

After surgery:

The time of hospitalization varies according to each case. Afterwards, the patient should rest at home for a week and refrain from physical activity, and will then gradually resume the activities of normal life.
